Sound & Acoustic Testing

Confirming that the buildings you build genuinely protect the people inside them.

When Sound Testing is Required

Sound insulation testing — also known as acoustic testing or Part E testing — is a mandatory pre-completion requirement for new build homes and conversions that involve separating walls or floors between different occupancies. It measures airborne and impact sound transmission between adjoining properties, confirming that the construction meets the performance standards set out in Part E of the Building Regulations.

At APT UK, we carry out sound insulation testing with the same accuracy and clarity you’d expect from all of our compliance services. Clear results, plain English guidance, and a straightforward process from booking to certificate.

Sound insulation testing is typically required for:

– New build houses and flats with shared separating walls or floors

– Conversions, including houses converted into flats

– Any building where Robust Details have not been used as an alternative to pre-completion testing

If you’re unsure whether your project requires a sound test — or whether Robust Details apply — we’re happy to advise.

Our process is straightforward

What the test covers

A typical pre-completion sound test involves:

  • Airborne sound insulation testing for walls and floors (DnTw + Ctr)
  • Impact sound insulation testing for floors (L’nTw)

Tests are carried out using calibrated equipment in accordance with the relevant British Standards. Results are presented clearly and, where relevant, compared directly against the performance values specified in Approved Document E.

If Your Duilding Doesn’t Pass

Not every building will pass first time, and that’s not unusual. Our aim is always to help you get to the right outcome, not just hand over a result and leave. If your result falls short of the required standard, we can direct you to the best options available to assist that will get you back on track and compliant.

Remember: Sound testing can often be combined with other pre-completion compliance visits. Contact us to discuss your project and find the most efficient approach for your programme
